Letter: To Catherine

My Dearest Catherine,

I thank you for your latest correspondence. It is a nice respite from the hectic daily business. I am glad to hear that you and mother are doing well. I remember how worried she was for us. Please tell her that her cooking ware has survived the journey and how it reminds me of her whenever I cook.

Things are well here. The operation of the mines has been going smoothly, according to William. He does not involve me much, not like he has back home either. Ah, here I go, still thinking of «home». So much is happening here. It is primitive and dangerous, there have been reports of Indian raids. Sometimes, it overwhelms me all. The mountains behind Five Point alone seem larger than all of Scotland. It feels as though one could wander in them for years and never see the other side, not even on a train. But the house is adequate and the people are friendly. I have made some acquaintances, but I have not yet found a friend. I hope to find one soon. Most days I spend painting. The wind outside is relentless, so I have taken to painting on paper inside the house whenever I am not cooking, washing or teaching Johanna. We have hired a teacher for her. Perhaps if they are any good, I will manage to capture the beauty of the mountains and send you a picture someday.

Until then, I miss you both dearly. I hope you can some day make it to here one day.

With love,
Your sister Cordelia

P.S. Johanna says she misses your plum pie. If you could send me your recipe, that would make her very happy.
